Carolyn Thurman Abt, Sachem Class of 1961, died 10/5/2021

Long time former resident of Lake Ronkonkoma, Carolyn Thurman Abt, passed away peacefully in Jacksonville Florida

Carolyn Gail Abt (nee Thurman), aged 78, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2021, in Jacksonville, FL. Carolyn was born on August 26, 1943, in Queens, NY. She moved to Lake Ronkonkoma from Centereach in 1960 and graduated Sachem HS in 1961. She married Erich John Abt in July 1965 at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Lake Ronkonkoma. They built a house on Church St and resided there for over 40 years. Carolyn was a devoted wife and a kind, loving, and supportive mother. She volunteered for the Gatelot Elementary School PTA and the Christ the King Catholic School library. Her daughters also attended Sachem and graduated 1985-Christine and 1988-Joanne. Carolyn worked as a bookkeeper for 30 years before retiring in 2009 and moving to Florida in 2010. She loved gardening, travel, shopping, and spending hours talking on the phone with her best friend, Jean Kirouac of Bluepoint NY. Carolyn was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Gerald H. Thurman (Irene) of Bayport NY. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Erich Abt of Jacksonville FL, daughters Christine (Curt) Zimmermann of Jacksonville, FL and Joanne (David) Lombardi of Miller Place, NY, grandchildren, Raymond Lombardi, Kyle Lombardi, and Erin Kress, two sisters, Elaine Sue Thurman (Robert) Touhey, and Vera Thurman (Class of 1963) Harris (Richard, deceased), brother-in-law, Robert Abt (Betty, deceased), 10 loving nephews and nieces, and many great-nephews and nieces. Funeral Mass honoring her life will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2021, 11a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church, 742 Arlington Rd N., Jacksonville FL 32211. Lunch reception following. Private cremation.
