Gun Scare at LI Walmart Sends Customers Running For Exits

Police say 5 men staged a fight at the store and one of them screamed, "There is a gun!"

COMMACK, NY – The Commack Walmart was evacuated Sunday afternoon after five men staged a fight, sparking fears of a shooting.

Initial reports of an active shooter at the store located at 85 Crooked Hill Road sent customers running for the exits.

"I can’t seem to stop shaking. My heart is still pounding," a mother of two who was in the store at the time wrote on Twitter. "Everyone started running, I had my 8 y/o, but we got separated from my hubby and my 5 y/o... total nightmare."

According to Suffolk County Police, multiple Suffolk County Police officers and New York State Police responded to the Walmart after receiving 911 calls regarding an active shooter inside the store at 12:50 p.m. Sunday.

Upon arrival, officers determined there were no shots fired or weapons involved, police said.

Further investigation revealed that five men staged an altercation at the store; one man appeared to slap another man, while the other three men were videoing the staged altercation, police said.

The sound of the slap led some people to believe that a shot may have been fired, and one of the men screamed, “There is a gun!" police said.

There was no shot or gun and there were no injuries; the investigation is continuing, police said.
