Drunk, High Driver Crashes Pickup, Hurting 5 People, 2 Seriously On Long Island: Police

Two were taken to local hospitals with serious injuries, and two were released, while he was evaluated by medical staff, Suffolk police say.

HOLTSVILLE, NY — A Suffolk man was impaired by a mixture of alcohol and drugs when his pickup truck smashed into an SUV, sparking a chain reaction crash that seriously hurt two people, Suffolk police say.

Matthew Sheehy was driving a 2022 Dodge pickup eastbound on the Long Island Expressway, 1000 feet east of Nicolls Road in Holtsville, when it struck a disabled 2010 Chrysler Town and County parked on the right shoulder at 12:20 a.m., police said, adding, that the Chrysler then crossed the lanes of travel and was struck by a 2018 Honda CRV.

The driver of the Chrysler, a 27-year-old Mastic Beach man, was taken to Stony Brook
University Hospital with serious injuries, while a passenger in the Honda, whose name is being withheld pending notification of their family, was also taken there but in critical condition, police said.

The driver of the Honda, a 23-year-old man from East Hampton, and a second passenger, were treated and released from Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue, and Sheehy, 46, of East Setauket, was taken to Stony Brook for evaluation, according to police.

He was charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs and alcohol and will
be arraigned on a later date.
