Sachem North Receives $10K Technology Grant

School's "Portal to Discovery" will allow for videoconferencing.

Sachem High School North received a $10,000 grant from Optimum Lightpath last week to fund a distance learning videoconferencing classroom.

Sachem is one of 11 Long Island schools that will split $100,000 in grant money for technology initiatives.

“Our staff continues to research grant opportunities during these difficult fiscal times,” said Sachem Superintendent James Nolan. “It is certainly a credit to our talented and dedicated staff members when they receive awards and grants that are extremely competitive. I am most thankful for the time, talents and efforts of our staff members.”

Sachem’s project is called “Portal to Discovery,” and it will consist of partnering with local universities to provide guest lecturers.

"The $100,000 in grants awarded to Long Island schools today underscore Optimum Lightpath's ongoing commitment to creating new opportunities for educational institutions that are powered by new, transformational technology," said Dave Pistacchio, President, Optimum Lightpath, in a statement. "We are eager to see the new innovative technology-infused programs implemented throughout the school year and will continue to look for opportunities to benefit students and teachers throughout the New York metro area we serve.”

Sachem received a $1.5 million grant from the federal government for physical education earlier this year. The efforts of that are already underway as district officials are researching curriculum and equipment upgrades.
