HAUPPAUGE, NY — On the heels of a 911 disruption involving Verizon, some kind of rodent apparently chewed through a cable, causing Suffolk's WiFi and accompanying webpage to crash, county spokeswoman Marykate Guilfoyle confirmed Tuesday night.

"A communication vendor utilized by the county experienced a network outage that had impacts on certain county systems, including the county website," she stated in an email.

The county's main webpage, as well as the police department's, was down for about an hour, according to Guilfoyle.

Residents were directed to call 311 while county officials worked with the vendor to restore the system.

The crash came one day after Suffolk's police agencies experienced a disruption in the county's 911 system.

The disruption was related to a Verizon wireless carrier issue, which was fixed by around noon.

Emergency services were not affected, officials said.

The outage also comes about 15 months after the cyberattack that halted Suffolk's web-based systems. The attack was later attributed to hackers, who officials said, demanded ransom.
