Suffolk Executive Taps Some Familiar Faces, Some New In His Appointments

HAUPPAUGE, NY — Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine's appointments announced this week include some new names and some familiar ones, including former Public Works commissioner Charles Bartha.

Bartha, who reportedly retired from the county in 2006, will once again hold the post of Public Works commissioner, while Darnell Tyson will serve as a his chief deputy commissioner.

Parks commissioner Jason Smagin will remain in his post.
Former county director of planning, Sarah Lansdale, will now serve as commissioner of economic development and planning.

Veteran government aide, Kevin Molloy, has been appointed chief deputy county executive. Molloy, a former newspaperman and editor of The Long Island Advance, previously worked for Romaine at the Town of Brookhaven, as well as Sen. Dean Murray, when he was in the assembly, and former U.S. Rep. Felix Grucci.

Michael Monahan will also serve as a chief deputy in Romaine's office.

Christina Capobianco has been appointed chief deputy county executive of finance, and Dr. Sylvia Diaz of the Health, Human Services, and Education department.

Attorney Jennifer Jeungst has also been appointed a deputy chief county executive to oversee sewer development.

Interviews are ongoing for the vacant position of deputy county executive for public safety.

Rob Waring will serve as the acting police commissioner until one is chosen, according to a report in Newsday.

Former communications director for the Legislature, Michael Martino, has been appointed to the same post but now under the executive's office.

The Legislature must approve Romaine's commissioner appointments.
