Press release from the Sachem Central School District:
Nov. 11, 2022
Wenonah Elementary School in the Sachem Central School District celebrated Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Awareness Month during October. Led by the building’s speech-language pathologists, students participated in activities to learn about the many different ways in which others communicate while using devices. Students across all grade levels became familiar with core boards, which combine pictures and words of core vocabulary to support communication.

Kindergarten through fifth grade students decorated the halls of Wenonah using sentence strips. They were tasked with using the word “on” to see how many sentences they could create. Kindergarten through second graders filled out “All About Me” sheets using picture symbols. Meanwhile, third through fifth graders played games using only core boards to communicate.
The AAC Awareness Month activities united the entire school community while promoting inclusivity.
