West Nile Virus Sample Tests Positive in Holtsville
Brings total up to 81 positive tests in Suffolk County this year.

The New York State Department of Health confirmed Friday that an additional mosquito sample collected on September 27 in Holtsville tested positive for West Nile virus, bringing a total of 81 samples collected this season in Suffolk to have tested positive.
“The confirmation of West Nile virus in a mosquito pool indicates that the virus is actively circulating within the mosquito population,” Dr. James Tomarken, the commissioner of Suffolk County Health Department, said in a statement. “While there is no cause for alarm, we urge residents to cooperate with us in our efforts to contain the spread of the virus, which can be debilitating to humans.”
While the mosquito season is winding down, Dr. Tomarken continues to urge individuals, especially those 50 years of age or older or those with compromised immune systems, who are most at risk, to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes, according to the county.
