Woman Drops Baby From Balcony to Escape Fire

The fire ripped through a Long Island apartment complex early Sunday.

RONKONKOMA, NY – A woman was forced to drop her baby from a second flood balcony after a fire broke out at a Long Island apartment complex early Sunday.

Fifth Precinct officers responded to a 911 report of a fire at Colony Park Apartments located at 500 Peconic St. in Ronkonkoma at about 12:50 a.m. When officers arrived, they found the building fully engulfed.

Prior to the officers’ arrival, a mother dropped her infant child from a second floor balcony into the arms of a bystander below, before jumping to the ground herself. The mother and infant were transported to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

One adult male was transported to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue with minor injuries. There were no other reported injuries.

Five units in the complex have been deemed uninhabitable. The investigation is continuing.
