71-Year Sayville Fire Department Member "Bubby" Verspoor Dies

Was named Fireman of the Year in 2009.

Clarence "Bubby" Verspoor, a 71-year member of the Sayville Fire Department, died this week.

Verspoor joined the department's "Juveniles" when he was 8 and then became a probationary member at the age of 18 in 1947.

Verspoor was an active member of the department from the day he joined, only missing calls when he spent two years in the Army during the Korean War.

He served in the Fire Police Squad beginning 1977 and was named captain of the unit in 2003.

In 2009, Verspoor was named the department's Fireman of the Year and was named named "Honorary Chief."

In an article about his Fireman of the Year honor, the department wrote: "He is very proud of the residents of Sayville who treat Fire Police members with respect and who are very cooperative. He takes pride in his job and knows that his Squad is relied upon by responding firefighters who depend on them to ensure that they are not hit by moving vehicles. "
