Fifth annual event promotes mental health, physical wellness and community connection.
SAYVILLE, NY — Sayville Public Schools recently hosted its fifth annual STRIDES Color Run, bringing students, families, and local organizations together for a morning devoted to wellness, fun, and community spirit.
The STRIDES program — which stands for Strength, Tolerance, Resilience, Independence, Diversity, Empathy, and Self-Awareness — focuses on supporting student mental health and physical wellness through district-wide initiatives.
“It was heartwarming to see so many students, families, and staff come together to enjoy a fun and energetic morning,” said Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services Jillian Makris. “The strong sense of community was evident everywhere you looked.”

Participants sprinted, jogged, and walked through colorful bursts of powder on the field behind Sayville Middle School, while cheering crowds and upbeat music added to the festive atmosphere.
Local groups also showed up to support student wellness, including the Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce, Great South Bay Coalition, Youth Enrichment Services, the Sayville chapter of Morgan’s Message, the Sayville High School Anchor Club, Sayville Teachers Association, Sayville Public Library, Fit for Life, and Community Ambulance Company, Inc.

“We’re so grateful for our student volunteers and community partners whose enthusiasm helped our younger participants have a safe, positive experience,” Makris said. “This was truly a vibrant celebration.”
