Two of Sayville School District’s elementary schools’ STRETCH (Supplementary Teaching Resources for Educationally Talented Children) programs recently saw great success in the PSEG Long Island I “Am Empowered” public service announcement (PSA) contest. Out of more than 220 submissions, Sayville had five videos reach the semifinals—three from Cherry Avenue and two from Lincoln Avenue.

The PSEG Long Island I Am Empowered PSA contest encouraged students to learn about energy efficiency and conservation, highlighting the steps their peers are already taking in these areas. After researching their topics, student groups created original PSAs designed to inspire others to take meaningful action in support of the environment.

Sayville’s five semifinalist teams were among just 32 total in the competition. Cherry Avenue’s Gabriella Duffy, Leo Johnson, and Emily Milanes placed in the top ten for the second consecutive year with their PSA titled “The Energy Kids”. Other semifinalist teams from Cherry Avenue included Teddy English, Kelson Kenny, and Kyle Bolliger for “Blast From The Past”, as well as Ryan Bishop, Colin Gorton, and Aiden Lundquist for “ARC-5”.

Lincoln Avenue was represented by two teams: Emerson Wade, Finley Wade, and Benjamin Plouffe for their submission “PW Squared:” and John Anastasio, Devin Dimango, Ryan Marandino, and James Wood for “The Energy Enthusiasts.”. All five Sayville teams were advised by STRETCH teacher Ms. Melinda Moran, marking the fourth consecutive year she has mentored a winning entry in the contest.

“I am truly so impressed by all of my students who participated in this year’s PSEG Long Island I Am Empowered PSA contest,” said Melinda Moran. “They all understood the importance of spreading their message to their peers and community through this project.”
