Long Island Weather: Winter Storm Warning Issued

Snowfall rates could exceed an inch per hour at times, the National Weather Service says.

LONG ISLAND, NY — More than a half-foot of snow could fall on parts of Long Island Friday and the timing of the storm couldn't be worse for those trying to get to work or school in the morning.

A winter storm warning is in effect from midnight to noon in Suffolk County. Nassau County will be under a winter storm advisory for the same time period. A total of 4-8 inches of snow is likely across the island with the highest totals expected in Suffolk.

The National Weather Service says "it looks like snow starts to overspread the region around midnight, the steadiest of the snow falls between 3-4 a.m. through 8-10 a.m., then snow tapering off after 10 a.m.-noon."

"Treacherous roadway conditions are likely, especially early. If possible, avoid travel!," the weather service says.

Thursday Night- Snow, mainly after 10pm. Low around 28. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Calm wind becoming northeast 5 to 8 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total nighttime snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Friday- Snow, mainly before 10am. High near 34. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. West wind 10 to 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 3 inches possible.

Friday Night- Mostly clear, with a low around 20. Wind chill values between 10 and 15. Northwest wind 13 to 16 mph.

Saturday- Sunny, with a high near 34. Wind chill values between 10 and 20. Northwest wind 5 to 11 mph.

Saturday Night- Mostly clear, with a temperature rising to around 32 by 5am. Light southwest wind increasing to 5 to 10 mph in the evening.

Sunday- A chance of rain and snow showers before 10am, then rain showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 44. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Little or no snow accumulation expected.

Sunday Night- Rain showers likely before 1am, then a chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 28. Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Monday- Mostly sunny, with a high near 35.

Monday Night- Partly cloudy, with a low around 15.
