OCTOBER EVENING PROGRAM FOR ADULTS:

The following program is hosted by the Greenburgh Nature Center in partnership with the Town of Greenburgh’s Conservation Advisory Council (CAC). The program is designed for adults and high school students, and is FREE.

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25, 6:30PM — BREAKING THE RULES, NATURAL DESIGN FOR THE REAL WORLD Larry Weaner, creator of “native landscapes,” is speaking on ”Breaking the Rules, Ecological Design for the Real World.  Join us for this educational program to discover some surprising strategies for your landscaping.

Learn answers to questions such as: Are native gardens automatically “low maintenance”? Must they be “wild” in appearance? How relevant is traditional horticulture to ecological design? What does the term “sustainable” have to do with anything?

This presentation will move beyond popular buzzwords and common oversimplifications to examine some surprising, and at times counterintuitive strategies. Learn how observation of plant development in nature can lead to new gardening techniques, many of which are diametrically opposed to horticultural conventions. Discover how these alternative approaches—on everything from selecting, arranging, and spacing plants to weeding—can yield more easily-maintained, rich landscapes that achieve their ecological and aesthetic potential.

Larry Weaner has been creating native landscapes throughout the eastern United States since 1977. His firm—Larry Weaner Landscape Associates—has a national reputation for combining ecological restoration with the traditions of fine garden design. In 2008 the firm received the top three design awards by the Association of Professional Landscape Designers. Weaner is an active guest lecturer and instructor for horticultural and environmental organizations throughout the United States, and his landscapes and gardens have been toured by numerous organizations, including The Garden Conservancy, The Cultural Landscape Foundation, and the American Horticultural Society. In 1990, he founded New Directions in the American Landscape, an educational programming series with a national following amongst landscape professionals.
