Tree Tips From SavATree

SavATree'sΒ  local arborist, Steve Skyer, wants Scarsdale residents to know that old European Beech Trees (trees of 100 or more years in age) located with in the Village of Scarsdale are susceptible to diseases such as bleedingΒ  canker and root rot. These diseases caused by pathogenic fungi usually result in tree mortality.

Bleeding canker is caused by a species of Phytophthora (a water mold) that infects the bark tissue. This pathogen kills the living cells in the bark tissue and vascular system and as a result the tree cannot transport water and essential nutrients leading to dieback of the tree canopy. Β Root rot is caused by a fungus called Ustilina which infects and kills root tissue reducing the tree’s ability to absorb water and nutrients from the soil.

Currently, Steve has several properties in Scarsdale where he is caring for some magnificent trees with varying degrees of both bleeding canker and root rot.Β  Steve has been working with SavATree's Plant Health Care Director, Patrick Parker, to develop a treatment program for these stately trees.
