11:30-1:30 p.m. – Collaborative Art Project: “The Alternet”
Patrons will participate (if they want) in a collaborative art project conceived and organized by artist/sculptor, Carla Rae Johnson. Using materials provided by the artists, participants will be able to create their own art on individual cards. The art will become part of the project/exhibit or can be taken home.
For the workshop at the Greenburgh Public Library, Carla Rae and some of the creative individuals with whom she collaborated with will talk about making creativity a daily habit and finding ways to make every day unique and memorable. Since participants in the “Alternet” range in age from students to seniors, you will hear from young artists and writers as well as some who are more “seasoned” or “professional.” They will also talk about why libraries are so important to artists and creative thinkers and, perhaps share some stories of surprising and creative discoveries made in card-catalogs and library stacks!
In 2010, Carla Rae purchased an old wooden card-catalog with fifty drawers. The catalog sat dormant in her studio for a year and a half while she contemplated how to use it. Finally, the idea emerged to honor its original function: fill the drawers with cards; hundreds of individual cards. That was when she invited every creative individual she knew to collaborate with her on the project.
