Progress report: Need for handrail on Ardsley Road sidewalk heading to Scarsdale train station

When there is black ice it is very dangerous. Commissioner of Public Works is ordering survey. We hope to install sidewalk before winter.

Progress report: need for handrails on Ardsley Road sidewalk to Scarsdale train station....and some personal experiences from residents (see e mails below)
In recent weeks I have highlighted the need for handrails on the Ardsley Road sidewalk heading down a steep hill leading to the Scarsdale train station from Edgemont. I received the following from the commissioner of Public works, Rich Fon. I am pleased that he is being responsive to this concern. Every time it snows and when there is black ice events, I worry that someone will slip, fall and get seriously injured. A railing would reduce the chances. After you read the Commissioner’s e mail, please read some of the e mails I have received from residents who highlight their personal experiences walking down the sidewalk. I deleted their names from their correspondence to me.
I am also asking that handrails be placed on other sidewalks around town on hills. If you have recommendations, please advise. My e mail is pfeiner@greenburghny.com. Please note that a handrail was placed on a sidewalk from the Scarsdale Golf club to E Hartsdale Ave a while back and has made the walk to the train station safer for residents.

E MAIL FROM RICH FON, PUBLIC WORKS COMMISSIONER
Please be advised that we will be ordering a land survey of this area of Ardsley Road this will take a few months
We will then have to put together a detailed plan and submit it to the Westchester County Department of Public Works for a review and possible approval
We will update as we know more if all goes well hopefully, they will be in by the next winter season
CORRESPONDENCE RECEIVED FROM RESIDENTS HIGHLIGHTING THEIR PERSONAL EXPERIENCES WALKING ON THE SIDEWALK HEADING TO THE TRAIN STATION

Mr. Feiner,

I write this email regarding the danger of walking that portion of Ardsley Road east of Old Army Road toward the Scarsdale train station. The steep slope is impossible in the winter months with black ice and during the fall with wet leaves. I myself have slid down the sidewalk and recently watched an entire family of 4 (2 adults with their 2 children) slip and slide down the hill with their rolling luggage during a light snowfall.

The addition of handrails would be a great help in these situations.

Any consideration would be appreciated.
ANOTHER E MAIL FROM AN EDGEMONT RESIDENT
100% agree with you that there should be handrails on Ardsley Road leading down to Scarsdale village - it can be treacherous walking down that hill, especially in bad weather (I know an Edgement resident who fell and broke both elbows doing just that, several years ago).
A THIRD E MAIL…
Hi Mr. Feiner

Please see that my walk to the train this morning was harrowing and dangerous. I almost fell a few times and had to choose between walking in the road with cars wizzing by or on the ice.

ANOTHER FALL

Got your letter about this idea. I live just off Ardsley Road and walk up and down the hill every weekday. I have fallen 2-3 times over the year.

I love the idea of a railing - I wholeheartedly support it and thank you for taking the lead.

IN SUPPORT…
Hello Paul, I am not a daily commuter but I make the trek down Ardsley Road often enough to the train station and beyond.
A handrail makes sense for safety and would help folks even in good weather navigate the steep slope up the hill.
Good luck. I AM in support of your effort.
