Scarsdale Mayor, Astorino Attend Town Hall Meeting

Mayor Miriam Flisser addressed the crowd at County Executive Astorino's Town Hall Meeting last night.

The following is the address that Mayor Miriam Levitt Flisser made at last night's Town Hall Meeting:

It is my pleasure to introduce County Executive Astorino. Elected county executive in 2009, his focus has been on streamlining county government and bringing tax relief to homeowners and businesses. In Scarsdale, a village of 15,000 families, Mr. Astorino is best known as a defender of our historic locally established zoning codes, the basis for Scarsdale's success as an independent residential community. These local ordinances, controlled by our Village residents right here in Village Hall, are under assault from distant Federal actions. Mr. Astorino demonstrated an understanding of our resources, and a respect for the financial security based on our real estate values, that support an exemplary culture of educational and recreational excellence here in our Village and County. Β

To give you some background about Mr. Astorino's base: in Westchester County, there is a working population of 610, 649 people. 70% of our male residents, and 50% of females, worked over 35 hours last week. 77% are privately employed, and 15.6% are government workers (only 7.3%, like me, are self-employed.) Westchester County has 344,475 households, with a mean household income of $125 thousand; averaged from $138 thousand for Natural Born Citizens, and 107 thousand for Naturalized Citizens like myself, again; and $84 thousand for non-citizens. Mr. Astorino has accepted accountability for a balanced approach to Housing requirements, and as a result, the County remains ahead of the Federal mandate for construction of Low Income housing, while still maintaining our independent local zoning, and being successfully family centered. In Scarsdale, we have recently been the recipients of major County Grants to substantially fund our biggest infrastructure project, the current South FM drainage basin installations, parts of which you can observe being built on the Post Road today.Β Β  Β  Β

Before taking office as County Executive, Mr. Astorino served on the County Board of Legislators, the Mount Pleasant Town Board, and the Mount Pleasant Board of Education. HeΒ  has also had a long and successful career in the radio industry at Sirius XM Satellite Radio and ESPN Radio. Rob lives in Mount Pleasant with his wife Sheila and three young children. Over the past months, he has hosted Town HallΒ  around the county - tonight's will be his fourth.Β
