Scarsdale Public Library To Host Author Appearances
The library's fall educational series will kick off in October.

The is pleased to announce appearances of three visiting authors as part of its Fall 2012 educational speaker series. Three authors from various disciplines and backgrounds will speak at the library on separate occasions throughout October and November, offering insight into their recent works as well as the opportunity to interact with and answer questions from library patrons.
βWe are honored to welcome such accomplished artists into our midst,β Scarsdale Public Library Executive Director Elizabeth Bermel said. βWe look forward to experiencing their varied perspectives and using this series as a springboard to enhance and grow the libraryβs educational speaker offerings.β
There is no charge to attend the author appearances and all are welcome to attend.

Eric Alterman is a graduate of and is a bestselling author, award-winning journalist and historian, as well as Distinguished Professor of English and Journalism at Brooklyn College and CUNY Graduate School of Journalism. He is a columnist for The Nation, and a regular contributor to The Daily Beast; and a Senior Fellow at the Center for
American Progress, the Nation Institute and the World Policy Institute. Alterman is the author of nine books and he will be appearing at the library on Tuesday, October 2, from 8:00 p.m. β 10:00 p.m. to discuss his most recent book, THE CAUSE: The Fight for American Liberalism from Franklin Roosevelt to Barack Obama, among other topics. Told through the lens of those who brought it to life, THE CAUSE recounts the struggles liberals have waged, working to transform government and the worlds of entertainment, law, media, and the course of public opinion to try to end economic inequality, racial discrimination, and political repression.
On Wednesday October 17 , at 7:30 p.m., author Susan Shaprio Barash will be speaking about her 13 book, THE NINE PHASES OF MARRIAGE: How To Make It, Break It, Keep It, which chronicles the true confessions of women who have been through it all β including marriage, childbearing and rearing, divorce, remarriage and the death of a spouse. Other works by Barash include Youβre Grounded Foreverβ¦But First Letβs Go Shopping that addresses the challenges mothers face with daughters of all ages and Toxic Friends, which explores why women stay in unhealthy friendships. She teaches gender studies at Marymount Manhattan College and is frequently interviewed about womenβs issues in various newspaper, television and radio outlets.
Wrapping up the series on Thursday November 1 , at 7:30 p.m. is Randy Cohen, former NY Times Ethicist columnist, who will be talking about his new book Be Good: How to Navigate the Ethics of Everything in which the author reflects on his 12 years as the New York Times Magazineβs original βEthicist,β β how the moral landscape has changed, how his own thinking about ethics has changed and what heβs learned. Cohen has also appeared regularly on NPR, and his been a guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Anderson Cooper 360. He is currently the creator and host of βPerson Place Thing,β a public radio program produced by WAMC.
