In Yaphank, on Longwood Road – in front of Longwood High School – between Smith Road and Wading River Hollow Road, two new solar powered Driver Feedback Devices were installed to alert approaching motorists of their speed.
“The mounted signs alert motorists to the 20 mph speed limit within the school zone, and then their current speed flashes below,” Losquadro said. “It is a very visual, real-time alert that, hopefully, encourages drivers to slow down if they’re not already within the speed limit.”

“Traffic safety is always paramount, especially when our most precious cargo is involved: our kids,” said Brookhaven Town Councilman Michael Loguercio. “Thank you to Highway Superintendent Dan Losquadro for installing electronic speed signs in proximity to both a junior and senior high school. Also thank you to School Superintendent Dr. Lance Lohman, for his continued advocacy of the safety of our children.”
“As part of the district's ongoing mission to keep our school community safe, the Longwood Board of Education Safety Committee, inclusive of students, parents, staff, and community members, worked closely with Brookhaven Town Highway Superintendent Losquadro to address speeding on our roadways,” said Longwood Schools Superintendent Dr. Lance Lohman. “Thanks to the tireless advocacy of our committee members, and their partnership with the town, the installation of the Driver Feedback Devices is another big step in keeping our roadways safer for students, parents, faculty, staff, and the community.”
In addition to the speed signs on Longwood Road, two Driver Feedback Devices and five speed limit signs were recently installed on Mill Road between Granny Road and Bellport Avenue in Medford.
