WFHS Varsity Wrestling Competes At County Championships

Aaron Nelson led the way with a third-place finish in his weight class, qualifying him for the New York State Championships this weekend.

The William Floyd High School boys’ varsity wrestling team was well-represented at the Suffolk County Championships held the weekend of February 11-12 at Stony Brook University as 10 Colonials competed in various weight classes. Aaron Nelson (172 lb.) led the way with a third-place finish in his weight class, qualifying him for the New York State Championships this upcoming weekend February 24-25 at the MVP Arena in Albany, NY!

Nelson, who also captured the league championship crown earlier this month, is the first William Floyd wrestler to qualify for states in nearly 10 years! Jack Meyer (102 lbs.) also had a very strong performance as he finished fifth in his weight class at the county championships.

Congratulations to the following student-athletes who competed in the Suffolk County Championships: Jack Meyer (102lbs.), Angel Villegas (118 lbs.), Kyle Collins (126 lbs.), Anthony Merkel (138 lbs.), Wayne Street (152 lbs.), Robert Fontanez (160 lbs.), Aaron Nelson (172 lbs.), Justin Brucato (189 lbs.), Conner Taphouse (215 lbs.) and Carlos Argueta (285 lbs.).

Additionally, five William Floyd female wrestlers also competed in the Long Island Girls’ Championships! Litzy Ramos placed third in her weight class, becoming the first female William Floyd female wrestler to achieve All-Long Island honors! This is the first time in William Floyd history that five female student-athletes completed a wrestling season exclusively with a boys’ team. Congratulations to Litzy and her fellow student-athletes Alyssa Mercado, Layla Yanes, Jaylee Itzep Escobar and Jaslene Pena on a great season!
