A Winning Day on the Greens Supports Community Literacy
Inaugural Golf Classic Raises More Than $8,000 for Literacy Programs at Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library

SHIRLEY, NY — AUGUST 19, 2025 — Golfers, sponsors, and supporters came together on Thursday, August 7, 2025, for the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library’s Inaugural Golf Classic to benefit the library’s Community Family Literacy Project, Inc. (CFLP). The event, held at the scenic Willow Creek Golf & Country Club in Mt. Sinai, raised more than $8,000 to fund vital literacy programs that serve children, adults, and families in the community.
The Community Family Literacy Project, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating, empowering, and elevating individuals and families through literacy. CFLP offers adult education, early childhood enrichment, family literacy classes, library outreach, and programs like Laundromat Literacy and Walk and Talk, all designed to meet the needs of the diverse Mastics-Moriches-Shirley community.
“The generosity and enthusiasm we saw at our first-ever Golf Classic was inspiring,” said Lindsay Davis, Literacy Program Coordinator. “Every dollar raised will go directly back into literacy programming — from providing books to families to funding scholarships — ensuring we can continue to meet the educational needs of our community.”

The highlight of the day was the winning foursome from East End Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning, who also supported the event as a tee box sponsor. Bret Jayne, Bob Borchers, John Krieger, and Joey Butler captured the top spot with an impressive score of 63 (8 under par). The team received a gift certificate for a foursome to play another round at Willow Creek.
“This event was a wonderful example of our community coming together for a common cause,” said Lonna Castro, Library Director. “We’re so grateful to our sponsors, players, and volunteers who made it a success — and we’re already looking forward to building on this momentum next year.”

“Strong literacy skills open the door to lifelong learning, and our library is proud to play a central role in that journey,” added Joe Maiorana, President of the Library Board of Trustees. “Thanks to everyone who took part, we’re able to expand programs that truly make a difference for local families.”
The library extends its thanks to all event sponsors, whose generosity made the day possible: Buckley’s Irish Pub, Century 21 Cor-Ace Realty, Corwin’s Jewelers, East End Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning, East End Screenprinting and Embroidery, Friends of Jim Mazzarella, JC’s Restaurant, Keane & Beane P.C., Matthew Golden, Mark Grossman Public Relations, Prisco’s Gourmet, Rico’s Clothing, Sandpebble Project Management, Searles Graphics, StoneX Financial, and TJ’s Hero Shop.
The 18-hole, resort-style course at Willow Creek provided the perfect backdrop for a day of friendly competition and community spirit. Between the beautiful weather, camaraderie on the greens, and the knowledge that every swing supported local literacy efforts, every participant left feeling like a winner.
