Woman Who Drove Into River Rescued By Suffolk Police Officers

The woman drove through a guardrail and landed in a river, police say. Check out some photos from the rescue.

MASTIC, NY — A woman who drove her BMW into a river in Mastic was saved by five Suffolk police officers on Tuesday.

A 53-year-old Shirley woman was driving a 2016 BMW i3 eastbound on Hampton Avenue when her vehicle went through a guardrail at the intersection with Riviera Drive and landed in the Forge River at 1:13 p.m., police said.

Seventh Precinct Officers Thomas Ciota, Sean Roche, Steven Rathjen, Michael Magioncalda and Ryan Kelly went into the river and pulled the woman from her BMW.

She suffered minor injuries and was brought to a nearby hospital. The officers did not need medical attention.
