Gas Leak in Soho 'Under Control,' FDNY Says

People tweeted from the scene at a Dean & DeLuca that everyone was evacuated and the FDNY rushed in.

SOHO, NY — A gas leak reported to the FDNY at 560 Broadway at around 1:30 p.m. was under control and FDNY had left the scene by 2 p.m., an FDNY spokesperson said.

The building houses the Dean & DeLuca high-end grocery store and Converse store. Some people tweeted from the scene that the FDNY had evacuated everyone from the building.

ConEd crews arrived after they got a call from the FDNY at about 1:30 p.m., a spokesperson for ConEd told Patch. They found a gas reading of 4 percent in the basement of the building, and 200 occupants were evacuated. They turned off multiple gas meters to eliminate potential sources of ignition and the fire department helped them vent the area. The source of the leak was found by ConEd crews to be a corroded and leaking pipe in the basement which was secured and people were let back in the building about 20-30 minutes later, the spokesperson said.
