HV Unions Recruiting Apprentices, Day 1: Elevator Constructors

Several local unions start apprenticeship drives in 2023. Patch will feature 1 a day this holiday week. First up: Elevator Constructors.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The Elevator Constructors will conduct a one-month recruitment drive for one apprentice, and residents of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Ulster and parts of Rockland and Westchester counties are eligible to apply.

The recruitment period runs Jan. 14 through Feb. 14. To be eligible, you must have lived for at least six months in:

  • Dutchess County
  • Orange County
  • Putnam County
  • Sullivan County
  • Ulster County
  • Rockland County – The town of Stony Point
  • Westchester County – The towns of Bedford, Cortlandt, Lewisboro, Mt. Kisco, North Salem, Pound Ridge, Somers, and Yorktown.
  • Columbia County – The towns of Ancram, Clermont, Copake, Gallatin, Germantown, Livingston, and Taghkanic.
  • Green County – The towns of Ashland, Catskill, Halcott, Hunter, Jewett, Lexington, Rattsville, and Windham.
  • Delaware County – The towns of Andes, Bovina, Colchester, Davenport, Delhi, Harpersfield, Herndon, Kortright, Meredith, Middletown, Roxbury, Hancock, and Stamford.

Applications are only available online. Applications can be submitted at any time during the recruitment period at www.neiep.org/careers.aspx.

Applicants must take and pass the Elevator Industry Aptitude Test with a score of at least 70 out of 100. A $25 testing fee is required on the day of the test. Payment must be in the form of a postal money order or bank certified check. No cash or personal checks will be accepted.

You may request that this fee be waived. Fee waivers will be approved upon showing verifiable proof of financial need.

The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee requires that applicants:

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must have a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (such as TASC or GED).
  • Must pass a drug test, at the expense of the sponsor, after selection and prior to indenture.
  • Must verbally attest to being physically capable of performing the work of the trade, which may include lifting, climbing, and working from heights.
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work and related instruction classes.
  • Must take the National Elevator Industry Educational Program Tool Assessment Test.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability, or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
