SOUTHEAST/BREWSTER, NY — If you’re like many of your Southeast/Brewster neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.
Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:
- Brewster Theater Company: aims to provide diverse theatrical productions of the highest quality to the community and surrounding areas.
- Second Chance Foods: recovers nutritious food before it goes to waste and delivers it to the tables of hungry families in the Hudson Valley.
- Green Chimneys: helps young people maximize their full potential by providing residential, educational, clinical & recreational services in a safe and supportive environment that nurtures connections with families, the community, animals and nature
- Ty Louis Campbell Foundation: funds innovative research and clinical trials geared toward the treatment of the most aggressive childhood cancers, with a focus on brain tumors.
- Putnam Valley Community Food Pantry: provides perishable/non-perishable groceries to around 175 families per week.
