Carmel Police Start Series Of Targeted Enforcement Campaigns

As a result of complaints about teens driving recklessly in a shopping center parking lot, the CPD began on Route 6.

CARMEL, NY — Carmel police issued 16 summonses and made one arrest Friday during the first of many upcoming targeted enforcement campaigns the department has planned.

As a result of numerous complaints from residents and business owners about teens congregating in the parking lot and driving recklessly, officers focused their attention on vehicles violating the law in and around the Mahopac Village Center on Route 6.

The four-hour detail resulted in 20 traffic stops, 16 traffic summonses and one arrest.

Most were for:

  • Unlicensed Operator
  • Operating with a Suspended license
  • Speed not reasonable and prudent
  • Unsafe Start – burn outs
  • Driving left of pavement markings
  • Equipment violations – muffler, tint, tail lamps, plate lamps etc.

Police said they will continue to focus their efforts on vehicles operating in an unsafe manner, with more initiatives planned for the upcoming months. The department will also be participating in several high visibility traffic initiatives sponsored by the New York State Governors Traffic Safety Committee.

April 1 – 8, CPD will be targeting distracted drivers in the “Put the Phone Away or Pay” campaign.

From May 19 – June 20, seat belt violators will be the focus during the annual “Click it or Ticket” initiative.

CPD along with police departments from around the state will be using these state and federally sponsored traffic enforcement campaigns to promote safe driving on our roadways, police said.
