Choice of NY Receives Pre-Trial Services Grant
This grant was provided by the Westchester County Department of Probation
Choice of New York, a non-profit dedicated to advocating for and working with the homeless, mentally ill, recently incarcerated, and other groups in need announced that the organization has received a grant to provide Pre-Trial Services for the Westchester County Court System. The organization’s goal is to assist judicial officers in making prompt, fair, and informed bail decisions that promote future court appearances and enhance public safety.
“As the Pre-Trial Services Agency for Westchester, we can offer our clients so much more than the assistance they need with the courts. Each one of our Pre-Trial Service clients can benefit from the vast amount of care management services we offer as well,” commented Shakaina Jordan, Director of Criminal Justice Programming. “Choice of NY can also provide services such as housing placement, homeless outreach, peer advocacy, community referrals, benefits advocacy, recidivism reduction, vocational services, access to a food pantry and clothing closet, and ongoing supports.”
The Choice of NY Pre-Trial Service Program began July 1st 2022, and currently assists the courts with Monitored Release, ROR (release on one’s own recognizance), Bail Expediting, and Bench Warrant Prevention of a defendant awaiting trial or who has recently been released from jail. A CHOICE Pre-Trial Specialist is currently located at and receiving referrals from the following courthouses: Yonkers, New Rochelle, Mount Vernon, White Plains, and Greenburgh. The Choice Pre-Trial Services Program has provided services to approximately 200 people since July 2022.
