Flood-Damaged State Road In Putnam Still Closed

PUTNAM COUNTY, NY — As cleanup and recovery from the massive flooding Sunday continue around the state, vital roads in the region are expected to reopen Wednesday, but one key route in Putnam will remain closed.

State Route 292 is still closed in both directions in Patterson between State Route 292; State Route 311; State Route 55, state transportation officials said.

In addition, while Route 6/202 (aka the Goat Trail) will reopen in both directions between Route 9D and Route 9 at the Putnam/Westchester border, motorists will not be able to cross the Bear Mountain Bridge into or out of Rockland County.

Between Sunday and Monday, more than 8 inches of rain was reported in parts of the Mid-Hudson region. The storms caused devastating flooding that closed roadways and damaged infrastructure in five counties.

The state Department of Transportation has more than 3,480 supervisors and operators available statewide, including more than 540 in the Hudson Valley region. Staff are actively assessing damage and working to get state roads back open as quickly as possible, state officials said.

Repair work so far has included tree and debris removal, roadway milling and paving where needed, and drainage repairs.

The progress so far is due to the around-the-clock work by DOT crews and contractors, Gov. Kathy Hochul said Wednesday.

Expected to reopen Wednesday for vehicular traffic were portions of Route 9W, Route 6 and Route 32.

Additional roads are expected to reopen in the coming days as cleanup and repair efforts continue.

• Part of Route 9W will reopen in both directions with reduced lanes in the areas between Cornwall and the Stony Lonesome Gate entrance to West Point/Mountain Avenue. This encompasses 4.8 miles or roadway including the major entrance into West Point from the north, restoring the main commuter route.

• Route 32 at Trout Brook Road, town of Woodbury, will reopen with one lane of alternating traffic via a temporary signal.

Most of the roads still closed are in Orange County:

• The Route 9W bridge over the Popolopen Creek in the town of Highlands is currently closed while state engineers continue to assess the damage and develop a strategy to reopen the bridge as quckly as possible.
• State Route 218 is closed between Storm King Highway and Town of Cornwall/Town of Highlands line, Town of Cornwall, Orange County
• U.S. 6 is closed in both directions between NY 293 and Palisades Parkway ramp, Woodbury, Orange County
• U.S. 9W is closed in southbound direction north of NY 218 Exit, Highlands, Orange County
• U.S. 9W is closed in both directions at Old State Rd, Highlands, Orange County
• U.S. 9W is closed in northbound direction at Bear Mountain Circle, Highlands, Orange County
• U.S. 9W is closed in both directions at Mine Dock Rd, Highlands, Orange County
• The Palisades Parkway is closed in southbound direction between U.S. 9W; U.S. 6; end route and Exit 15; Old Gate Hill Road; County Route 10, Highlands, Orange County
• State Route 980U is closed in northbound and southbound directions between U.S. 9W and State Route 218, Highlands, Orange County
• State Route 17 is closed in eastbound directions on ramp to exit 130A, Woodbury, Orange County
• State Route 448 is closed in both directions east of North Broadway, Mount Pleasant, Westchester County

Many roads were affected in Putnam. As of Tuesday, the Office of Emergency Management reported local closures or partial closures included:

• Wiccopee Road at Peekskill Hollow Road in Putnam Valley
• Peekskill Hollow Rd at Wiccopee Rd in Putnam Valley
• Tinker Hill Rd at Peekskill Hollow Rd in Putnam Valley
• New Hill Rd at Peekskill Hollow Rd in Putnam Valley
• Rush Dr at Oscawanna Lake Rd in Putnam Valley
• Brooksfalls Rd in Putnam Valley
• Tyler Rd in Putnam Valley
• Mill St in Putnam Valley
• Upper Station Rd in Garrison has one lane open
• Old Manitou Rd at Route 9D, in Garrison
• Old Forge Drive at Route 301 in Kent
• Lake Shore Dr at Birch Rd in Mahopac

The state Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services has Office of Emergency Management, Office of Fire Prevention and Control, and Disaster Recovery field teams conducting damage assessments and safety inspections in impacted communities. Hochul and DHSES have been in contact with federal officials about the need for a major disaster declaration to provide federal reimbursement to local governments.
