A healing mass for Sean Callahan, a Mahopac boy who is battling cancer, is scheduled to take place at 8:45 Sunday morning at St. John the Evangelist Church in Mahopac.
Callahan, who has a handful of younger siblings, is at home recovering from a June 19 surgery aimed at removing the cancer from his brain. He was diagnosed with the disease years earlier, but he was in remission until recently.
On June 1, at the Relay for Life event in Mahopac, Callahan read a poem during the opening ceremony. Friends and family members call him "Little Soldier."
He's facing a "long journey of yet-to-be-determined treatments," according to a statement from the Putnam County executive's office.
The healing mass will be offered by Fr. Jarlath Quinn of St. John's (221 East Lake Blvd. in Mahopac). It will include a collection for the Callahan family, who will reportedly be in attendance.
County Executive MaryEllen Odell encourages residents to keep the little boy, who is in elementary school, in their thoughts.
"I cannot begin to image what the Callahan family must be going through right now," she said. "I know prayer can be quite powerful and my prayers are certainly with all of them right now."
