Last-Ever Free Thanksgiving At Bob's Diner On Thursday

An annual tradition that has been upheld for decades will end as the diner itself is slated for demolition under the urban renewal plan.

Each Thanksgiving, the Putnam Italian American Social Club roasts turkeys for a community meal, but that tradition will never be the same again after this year.

BREWSTER, NY — It will soon be last call for one of the Hudson Valley's most enduring and moving holiday traditions.

Since the fall of 1955, Bob's Diner has been a landmark in the heart of Brewster village. Named for Bob Sprague, grandfather of the current owner, Thomas, the diner has been an eating place and meeting place for almost 70 years. However, as previously reported, it is slated for demolition under Brewster's urban renewal plan.

For several decades, Bob’s Diner has been offering a full-blown holiday banquet to all guests on Thanksgiving Day. The community gets behind the project with local people and businesses donating food and with turkeys being cooked in ovens all over Brewster.

In a social media post, the owners of Bob's Diner explained how this will be the last annual free Thanksgiving event at Bob's Diner, as the diner itself will no longer exist soon. They also shared ways in which the community could help:

Greetings everyone,

It's that time of year again. We are hosting our Annual FREE Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 28th, at Bob's Diner (27 Main Street Brewster, NY 10509). This event is open to everyone. It starts at 2 pm and will go until people stop coming in. As always, if you or someone you know have nowhere to go, can't afford a meal, don't want to cook or clean and want some company, please join us.

Sadly, this will be our very LAST one. As many of you know, the redevelopment plan does not include us, and Bob's Diner will cease to exist. We have been faced with tremendous uncertainty and frustration. The one thing we are certain of is just how amazing our community is.

We are honored to have been able to serve Thanksgiving dinner for the past couple of decades. We thank each and every beautiful human for supporting us and for always being generous, kind, and caring.

Here are some ways you can help:

1) FOOD - Please bring a favorite meal, side dish, dessert, or anything you'd like to share.

2) DONATING - Each Thanksgiving, we do a fundraiser for Youth for Christ. Ray Lightcap works in the Albany area, helping young children and mothers lead better lives and keeping them off the streets. If you don't want to cook and want to help, a small donation is kindly appreciated.

3) SHARING - Please share this post. Spread the word to everyone you know. No one should ever go hungry and be alone on Thanksgiving.

Lastly, thank you, oh so much. We couldn't have done this without your help. We see you. We appreciate you. Let's make this last one unforgettable.

With love and gratitude,
Thomas, Jacquii, Kaiya & Nico Sprague
