Putnam County offices will close early Friday (July 19), according to County Executive MaryEllen Odell.
The following post appeared on her Facebook page at about noon:
Due to the Electric Energy Emergency issued by Mr. Lysogorski from the New York State Public Service Commission, I have decided that all non-essential county departments will close at 2 p.m. today. Employees who start work at 8 a.m. and later are not to take lunch. Instead, work through your lunch period and leave at 2 p.m.
It is imperative that everyone take appropriate steps to relieve the strain on the energy grid. Be thoughtful when using air conditioning or other high energy appliances at home for the remainder of the day.

As I stated in an earlier memo, please make sure you drink plenty of water, wear loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothing and stay out of the sun as much as possible.
Again, I would also remind you to check on elderly friends and family members throughout the weekend as this high heat and humidity can take a serious toll on their health. And in case of any heat related emergency, do not hesitate to call 911.
