Opportunities Of The Week: BBQ, Swap Event, Bilingual Survey

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Each week, Patch will be highlighting volunteer opportunities in the Hudson Valley. This will be a chance to help your community and be an opportunity to give back — perhaps in a way you didn't consider before.
This week we are putting the spotlight on some opportunities hand-selected by our friends at Volunteer New York! All opportunities can be found at https://www.volunteernewyork.org.
Camp Success BBQ
Camp Success is a summer day camp program for youth, ages 5 to 17, who have been diagnosed with behavioral challenges. Family Services of Westchester is hosting an end-of-summer celebration for these campers and their families, and volunteers are needed to help with setup, serving food, assisting with games and activities, and cleanup. All volunteers will receive an orientation and lunch. Volunteers must be 21+ but those 16+ can sign up as part of an adult volunteer's team.
Date: 8/14 from 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m.

Zero-Waste Garage Helpers
The Take-It-or-Leave-It ("TILI") Garage is a free swap event that aims to repurpose usable items in order to reduce waste as well as to help out those who could use free items for their homes. Volunteers can keep this community space running smoothly by placing incoming items in the correct area of the garage, helping to manage and sort the materials received, moving tables, and helping with set-up and break-down.
Date: Sundays from 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. and 1-3:30 p.m.

Environmental Program Mentors
Environmental Leaders of Color's Student Ambassador Program gathers teams of students from participating high schools—including Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, and Port Chester—to learn about hazardous household materials and the importance of clean drinking water. The teens will then perform outreach, present informed research, design graphics, and more. Adult volunteers with social media, marketing design, and journalism skills are needed guide these small teams of high school students through their projects over the course of the school year.
Date: Fridays, plus in-person events

Blingual Survey Volunteers
The Westchester County Hispanic Advisory Board, along with Pace University, has launched a survey to identify the needs of the Hispanic and Latino community and to influence policies and resources to support this population. Bilingual volunteers are needed to help encourage Westchester County residents of Hispanic or Latino descent who are 18+ to take this survey by passing out fliers or encouraging them to scan the QR code. All materials will be provided to volunteers, and court-ordered or community service hours will be verified.
