Ranger Rescues Non-Swimmer Canoeing On White Pond

They had rolled the canoe and were unable to flip it back over, DEC officials said.

PUTNAM COUNTY, NY — While on canoe patrol on White Pond at 2:40 p.m. Sunday, Forest Ranger Griggsby Cowart observed someone in the water clinging to another person’s kayak, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation reported.

The person had rolled the canoe and was unable to flip it back over. Unable to swim but wearing a personal flotation device, they were able to grab the kayak, DEC officials said.

Cowart used a throw rope for the person and tied it to the kayak. Then Cowart and the kayaker towed them one-half mile to shore, DEC officials said.
