However, just as the new Commissioner of Emergency Services isn't new to the job, neither is his new Director of Emergency Medical Services

PUTNAM COUNTY, NY — The shake-up at the top of Putnam's emergency services agency continues with the rehiring of Bob Cuomo as the Director of Emergency Medical Services for Putnam County. He previously held the position from 1997 to 2018.

A year ago, Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne appointed Robert Lipton to the post of Commissioner of the Bureau of Emergency Services. Lipton, who had been Deputy Commissioner of the Bureau since 2013, replaced Kenneth Clair, who became commissioner in 2017 and left with the outgoing administration of former County Executive MaryEllen Odell.

In February, Christopher Shields was named Director of Emergency Management in the bureau, a position that had been vacant.

Cuomo replaces Alex Roehner, who left several months ago.

In his new position, Cuomo will be responsible for the oversight of county EMS agencies, EMS education programs, and various training initiatives. His leadership promises to uphold the county's commitment to providing timely and effective emergency medical services to its residents.

He'll connect with Empress Ambulance Services, with which the county has a contract for EMS/ambulance services.

Last year, Putnam dropped the California-based company that Clair and Roehner brought in at the end of 2021 for EMS/ambulance services, and went back to Empress, its previous provider. SEE: Putnam Drops Controversial Ambulance Service After 18 Months

Cuomo's career spans over four decades in emergency medical services — he began as an EMT and paramedic in 1978.

"Bob Cuomo's return as the Director of EMS is a testament to his unwavering commitment to public safety and emergency response," Byrne said. "His leadership will ensure that Putnam County continues to deliver high-quality emergency medical services to our residents."

Lipton welcomed Cuomo back, highlighting his proven track record and dedication to the community. "Bob Cuomo's return brings a steady hand to our EMS operations. We have confidence that he’ll be instrumental in maintaining the high standards of care that our residents deserve," Lipton said in the announcement.

Cuomo himself expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve once again.

"It is an honor to return to this role and continue serving the residents of Putnam County," he said. "I am committed to ensuring that the individuals providing life-saving in the field treatment are well-equipped, highly trained, and ready to respond to any emergency situation."
