'Tyathlon' to Feature Triathlon, 5K, Kids Obstacle Course

The first ever Annual Mahopac Tyathlon is slated to take place Saturday (Sept. 21), and organizers have already raised $50,000 for the cause: more treatment options for pediatric cancer.

The event includes a triathlon around Lake Mahopac and a 5K run/walk, as well as an inflatable obstacle course for children, all aimed at raising money for The Ty Louis Campbell Foundation.

Pawling residents Cindy and Lou Campbell--whose 5-year-old son passed away in October after a battle with brain cancer that lasted more than half his life--established the non-profit.

"In honor of Ty and all childhood cancer warriors, the Ty Louis Campbell (TLC) Foundation is hosting a triathlon where friends can swim, bike and run around beautiful Lake Mahopac," organizers said in a press release. "There is also a 5k walk/run following the triathlon followed by a 'Super TYathlon' for children ages 2-15 where they can show off their skills on an 85-foot inflatable obstacle course!"

The schedule of events is as follows:

7:30 a.m. – Triathlon begins (finish line located behind Four Brothers Pizzeria)
10 a.m. – Awards given to Triathlon participants (stage is located on the veranda at Four Brothers)
10:15 a.m. – Check Presentation to Dr. Jeff Greenfield/Weill Cornell’s Children’s Brain Tumor Project
10:30 a.m. – 5K begins
12:30 p.m. – Kid’s TYathlon obstacle course begins, held at Chamber Park

Here's some more information, as provided in the press release:

"Pediatric cancer is the number one cause of death by disease among children, and almost one out of four children diagnosed with cancer die. However, there are few cancer treatments specifically designed for children. For those that do survive treatment, they often suffer from lifelong side effects. TLC seeks more effective, less harmful treatment options specifically designed for children.

Our Mission
The Ty Louis Campbell (TLC) Foundation is a certified nonprofit organization that funds innovative research and technology specifically geared toward the treatment of the deadliest childhood cancers (including brain and spinal cord tumors). Our organization seeks less toxic, more effective treatments that are specifically designed for children fighting cancer. Our ultimate mission is to help fund the intelligence and technology that will uncover new ways to cure children with cancer."
