Victim Killed In Pileup Crash ID'd As 74-Year-Old Brewster Man
Police in Carmel said that unsafe speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash involving four vehicles on NY Rte 303.
CARMEL, NY — Authorities have identified the victim of yesterday morning's deadly crash in Putnam County.
The Carmel Police Department said the fatal motor vehicle crash unfolded on Route 301, in the area of Smokey Hollow Court, around 9:15 a.m. on Thursday.
Investigators said a 2024 Subaru Impreza, driven by 74-year-old Vito Planamento, of Brewster, was headed east when it rounded a curve and struck a pickup truck and trailer carrying an excavator. Planamento had serious injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where he later died.

The impact also caused a secondary collision involving two other vehicles. One of the other drivers sustained minor injuries, according to police.
Route 301 was closed between Gipsy Trail Road and Dixon Road for several hours during the investigation.
