7 Brooklyn N Train Platforms To Close For Over A Year

Nearly $400M worth of renovations is going to disrupt N train riders through late 2018

BROOKLYN, NY — Seven Brooklyn N train platforms will close for more than a year while the MTA does $400 million worth of upgrades, the agency said.

Starting at 5 a.m. on July 30, Coney Island-bound N trains will run express from Eighth Avenue to Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue at all times of the day through "late 2018," the MTA said. The downtown N trains will only make one stop in between, at Bay Parkway.

That means those N trains will skip Fort Hamilton Parkway, New Utrecht Avenue, 18th Avenue, 20th Avenue, Kings Highway, Avenue U and 86th Street.

The MTA is asking people at those stations to take Coney Island-bound N trains to either Bay Parkway or Coney Island-Stillwell and then transfer to a Manhattan-bound train for local service.

The disruptions are being caused by upgrades to nine century-old stations on the N line in Brooklyn. Those upgrades include new platforms, brighter lighting, new stairs and a new paint job, according to the MTA.

"The Sea Beach corridor opened over 100 years ago and needs to be brought into a state of good repair while adding new amenities and technology to improve our customers’ experience," MTA Interim Executive Director Ronnie Hakim said in a press release.

"When the work is finished at all nine stations and the tracks that connect them, our customers will see brighter, cleaner and safer stations and experience a smoother, more reliable ride, while our mobility impaired customers will be able to access that part of the Sea Beach line by using new ramps and new elevators."
