Alex Luyando, a 23-year-old who works in accounting, was standing on the north-bound platform waiting for the N train at the Eighth Avenue stop with about 50 or so people, he told Patch.

"It was a full platform. It was people going to work," Luyando said.

"I was about maybe 30 feet from the guy. I’m looking at the train coming, and I see this one guy acting erratic, kind of funny. He’s leaning over, leaning over. And I'm like, 'What is this guy about to do?'"

He jumped onto the tracks while the train was still about 10 feet away, Luyando said.

"I heard a gasp and crunching," he said. "And I ran out of the station."

Authorities took the man to Maimonides Medical Center in critical condition, police said. He was suffering cardiac arrest, the FDNY told Patch, but was likely to survive.

"I didn’t go to work today. I didn’t need to do any work today. My day was done," said Luyando. "I'd never seen anything like that in my life."
