ICYMI: No New Medical Marijuana Dispensary For Sunset Park

A dispensary which had gotten full community support will not be registered under the state's new round of approvals.

SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN — Sunset Park will have to wait a little longer for the first medical marijuana dispensary in the neighborhood.

Start-up Napenthea LLC, which had community board support to open a dispensary in Sunset Park, was not among the five businesses chosen by New York State in its next round of registration for state medical marijuana businesses.

The five businesses will open across the state over the next two years. It's unclear if Napenthea would have another chance to open after that two-year period is over.

"The Department is undertaking a phased-in approach to ensure their smooth integration into the industry," a state Department of Health said in its announcement. "The approach includes performing due diligence, verifying their current financial stability and capitalization, and ensuring their overall suitability to participate in the Medical Marijuana Program in a manner that promotes public health and protects public safety.

"No other organizations or entities are currently under consideration."

The five businesses that did get approved were New York Canna, Inc.; Fiorello Pharmaceuticals, Inc.; Valley Agriceuticals, LLC; Citiva Medical LLC; and PalliaTech NY, LLC. It was not immediately clear where they plan to open dispensaries.

The announcement was first spotted by Brooklyn Reporter.
