2. A first-of-its kind independent commission could not come to a compromise in redistricting Brooklyn. The Democrat-controlled N.Y. Legislature took over redrawing district lines for Senate, Assembly, Congress. Sunday night, New York’s Democrat-controlled Legislature released the first look at what the state’s proposed congressional district lines could look like for the next 10 years. Staten Island’s district, which it shares with part of Brooklyn, would shift from more conservative areas, like Dyker Heights and Bath Beach, to more liberal areas like Park Slope and Sunset Park, according to the map from the New York Legislative State Task Force on Demographic Research and Apportionment. According to City Limits, "a scarcity of affordable housing continues to drive New York City’s homelessness crisis and property owners frequently discriminate against applicants with vouchers, but shelter residents with CityFHEPS subsidies who do manage to find a place face another set of obstacles: a lengthy approval process often hindered by miscommunication and administrative mistakes, staff shortages hitting an overburdened workforce, and slow payments to antsy landlords eager to rent out their units."
