Here are the top stories in Sunset Park today:
- Behind Bars is a bicycle store in Sunset Park that repairs, refurbishes and recycles bikes. The owner, Sandra Alfonzo, founded the nonprofit, Adapt Ability, that customizes adaptive bicycles for the disabled and donates them. Each refurbished bike is custom made for the needs of every disabled child. Also, they cost less than half of what other companies charge. Residents can call Adapt Ability at 718-715-4111. - The popular free outdoor movie series, "Movies Under The Stars," is returning to Brooklyn this weekend. A screening of "Spider-Man: No Way Home," comes to Sunset Park Playground on Friday, and "Space Jam: A New Legacy" will be screened the next day in South Brooklyn. This weekend's showing are among over 150 that are schedule throughout the city this summer. (Patch)
- Thursday, New York City launched a $6.5 million universal college fund for thousands of kindergarteners in public and some charter schools. The students will each have $100 invested in an account in their name, which city officials hope will help reduce their expenses later down the line. (Gothamist)
- The majority of New York City voters disapprove of how Mayor Eric Adams has handled surging crime, a new poll released Wednesday shows. According to a Quinnipiac University poll of registered New York City voters, crime is viewed as the most urgent issue facing NYC. According to the poll, 54 percent of voters disapproved of how Adams was handling homelessness. On his handling of relations between the police and the community, 49 percent approved. (Fox News)
