Here are the top stories in Sunset Park today:

  1. Right now, animal shelters in the Sunset Park area are bursting with loving animals like Edison & more. According to the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, millions of companion animals are surrendered to animal shelters each year nationwide. Of those, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. Shelters often look after other animals in search of a permanent home as well, including pigs, birds and even horses. 2. Mayor Eric Adams faces an uphill climb in fulfilling his promise to make New York safer. Over the weekend "Michelle Alyssa Go, a 40-year-old woman of Asian descent who worked at the consulting firm Deloitte, was pushed to her death in front of a train pulling into a Times Square station on Saturday." Go’s death rekindled conversations about public safety, a defining issue of Adams’s campaign last fall. “Our recovery is dependent on the public safety in this city and in this subway system,” Mayor Eric Adams said on Sunday. 3. One of the largest clean energy procurements in the U.S. so far is happening right here in Brooklyn's Sunset Park. Equinor and BP were chosen to provide New York State with offshore wind power. "Once complete, Empire Wind 1, Empire Wind 2, and Beacon Wind 1 will produce enough electricity to power around 2 million New York homes." Equinor recently announced the opening of a New York project office located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, opposite the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. The wind farms will help generate more than $1 billion in economic output to New York State. That includes investments in ports and infrastructure. (Electrek.co)
