Here are the top stories today in Sunset Park:
- Mayor Eric Adams has vowed to prioritize the New York City’s tax issue. Bloomberg Tax journalists stated, "the 40-year-old state law that created the system was built to favor single-family homeowners over renters or commercial buildings. And it often hurts the owners of low- and moderate-income condos and co-ops, whose properties are compared to high-rise, luxury buildings. Hundreds of residents last year implored a special city commission to change the law, as spiraling home prices magnified inequities, forcing some longtime city dwellers into debt, and others to consider leaving." (Bloomberg)
- According to WPIX 11 New York, a Bedford-Stuyvesant apartment fire late on Sunday night left eight people injured, including a firefighter. The blaze erupted in a seven-story residential building at 400 Herkimer St., and 60 firefighters from 12 units were dispatched to control the fire. One civilian was hospitalized with severe injuries, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Monday morning. (WPIX 11 New York)
- The positivity rate for the coronavirus is falling, according to state health data. In fact, there is a 95 percent drop from the omicron surge's peak, when nearly 48,000 people fell ill in a single day, data shows. Mayor Eric Adams on Sunday highlighted the substantial drop in daily new infections. “Not only is New York City winning in the fight against COVID-19, but we are bringing even more help right to New Yorkers’ front doors to continue beating this pandemic,” he said in a statement.
