Here are the top stories in Sunset Park today:

  1. An independent commission failed to find a compromise between the district maps that the Democrats and Republicans created. The map associated with Democrats brought the Brooklyn part of the district into the liberal stronghold of Sunset Park, while the Republican-associated map brought in more politically diverse areas, like Dyker Heights and Bensonhurst, said silive.com. As a result of the impasse, New York’s Democrat-controlled Legislature will take over line drawing for state Senate, Assembly, and congressional district lines. (SILive.com)
  2. Massive interactive art piece inspired by pools of moonlight comes to Sunset Park. This Friday, Jan. 28, The Collision ProjectIndustry City’s campus-wide arts initiative, will unveil the massive installation at the Sunset Park complex. "The Pool" is a giant, interactive piece made of 100 large circular pads where visitors are encouraged to “walk, dance, jump and play.” (Brooklyn Reader)
  3. What if the Brooklyn Queens Expressway was torn down, instead of being repaired? What would the neighborhoods look like? Well, that is the premise behind the The BQE Exhibition that is currently housed at the Institute for Public Architecture (IPA), which has made its permanent headquarters in two floors of Governors Island’s Block House. The controversial BQE destroyed and splintered neighborhoods; instead of mitigating vehicular traffic as intended, the BQE increased it. (Architectural Record)
  4. In celebration of the Lunar New Year, Chinese restaurants' streets would traditionally burst with lion dancers and revelers ushering in a fresh start for the holiday. However, many Chinese restaurants across the city continue to struggle because of COVID-19 and continued anti-Asian sentiments. So, with the Year of the Tiger just around the corner, it’s a great time to support culinary institutions like Yun Nan Flavor Garden in Sunset Park; pick up one of the holiday’s most celebratory foods: dumplings!
