Here are the top stories today in Sunset Park:

  1. Nydia Velazquez, whose district includes Sunset Park, Red Hook, the Brooklyn waterfront, Williamsburg and Bushwick, came in number 15 on the “Power 100” list. She is described as, among other things, an advocate for Puerto Rico and for Puerto Ricans in the U.S., she was a supporter of current Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. (Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
  2. Iwen Chu is running in the Democratic primary for a newly created state senate district in Albany to represent Brooklyn’s Chinatown. According to PoliticsNY, "Chu said she’s running primarily because the significant Asian American communities of Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst and Dyker Heights have gone without representation in the state capital for far too long." “This community has been historically underrepresented,” Chu said. “Until now, we don’t have any Asian representative in the state government level.” (Politics NY)
  3. Four of the R-32 train cars have begun their final journey; these iconic cars were introduced in 1964 and starred in movies like "Joker." The subway cars were transferred from the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal to 65th Street Yard via street-level tracks on First Avenue in Sunset Park. The cars will be disassembled, and the parts will be shipped to Ohio where they will be scrapped for recycling. (Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
  4. A young mother and her toddler died of their injuries sustained in an apartment fire early on Tuesday morning. At 9:49 a.m. on March 1, FDNY firefighters responded to a fire at 6 Agate Court, and were met with heavy smoke and fire pouring out of the brownstone. Three victims were pulled from the blaze including the 22-year-old mother and her 1-year-old son. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. (AMNY)
