Here are the top stories in Sunset Park today:
- The lot located between 61st and 64th streets, which is just steps away from the 8th Avenue subway station, is going the way of so many parcels in Brooklyn, a 21-story mixed-use building. Joel Werczberger of Watermark filed for permits at (the lot) 6128 8th Ave. in Sunset Park. The building will have 113 rentals and parking spaces, both indoor and mostly outdoor. (New York YIMBY)
- The Wednesday morning commute got a little harder, a train tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan was engulfed with smoke. At about 9 a.m., the MTA reported the smoke on the red line which led to significant delays and miscommunications. The cause of the smoke is yet to be known. (Patch)
- Three robberies within an hour happened in the Bronx by a man on a scooter, police said. Police are trying to see if the three robberies are connected to the Sunset Park incident where two men on a scooter grabbed the purse of a woman, 41, and dragged her to the ground. Call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS if you have any information on these incidents. (NBC New York)
- The 65th annual Puerto Rican Day Parade was celebrated in Sunset Park on Sunday, June 12. The Puerto Rican community felt this march was especially meaningful; the 100-year anniversary of the Puerto Rican Nationalist Party, the fifth anniversary of Hurricane Maria and the lives lost to COVID-19. Are you a Sunset Park resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2 percent when inflation is >3 percent
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164 percent (1995-2021)
