Here are the top stories in Sunset Park today:

  1. Nothing says more about economic opportunity than jobs. Jacobs was selected by Empire Offshore Wind for the design of New York's South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT). The facility, located in Sunset Park, will see a redevelopment of more than 70 acres of underutilized property into a vibrant, working waterfront. "The contract award will bring direct jobs to the local community, leaning on Jacobs' expertise to advance these vital port facilities to support Empire Wind, Beacon Wind and the wider offshore wind industry," said acting Vice President Empire Wind and Beacon Wind, Equinor Renewables U.S. Teddy Muhlfelder. (PR Newswire)
  2. In an opinion piece in the New York Daily News, Gov. Kathy Hochul should be applauded for her work to revive the Interborough Express (IBX). It is the first step in bridging the gap between the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. "Employers have migrated outside of Manhattan, and we’ve seen robust job growth in neighborhoods like Long Island City, Downtown Brooklyn, Jamaica and Sunset Park." What is needed next is light rail to service places like LaGuardia Airport, Willets Point and Queens, which is home to two world-class airports, the U.S. Open tennis tournament, and the Mets. (New York Daily News)
  3. In an attempt to relieve congestion and meet quota, the Taxi and Limousine Commission's decided not to issue any new for-hire vehicle licenses for six months. The commission will instead issue new licenses only to cars that are wheelchair accessible to meet its mandate to make 50 percent of all yellow taxis accessible to people in wheelchairs or scooters. At Sunset Park Car Service, dispatcher Johnny Lopez said the pandemic and rising fuel and maintenance costs have piled onto the fallout that began several years ago due to competition from app-based ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft. (THE CITY)
  4. A manhunt is underway for a suspect and a getaway vehicle in connection with Friday's shooting of a toddler in Brownsville. The 6-year-old girl was shot while her father was picking her up from daycare just after 6 p.m., and she remains in stable condition. Police said that the girl and her father were not the intended targets of the shooting, but the suspect remains at large. (Eyewitness News - ABC Chanel 7)
  5. Tuesday, the same day President Joe Biden signed the Emmett Till Anti-Lynching Act, a bill making lynching a federal hate crime, "graphic flyers depicting lynching were found on a Brooklyn 4 train at the Utica Avenue station near Eastern Parkway," according to the New York Post. They were taken down by police shortly after the flyers were reported. (Patch)
