Here are the top stories in Sunset Park today:

  1. Equinor and BP announced the launch of a New York-based Offshore Wind Innovation Hub. The Hub, located in Sunset Park, adjacent to Equinor and BP’s new project office, will create networking opportunities between industry participants and start-ups that "bring new technological solutions to the growing US offshore wind industry." The Hub is not just a think-tank, it will also host workshops, educational programming, and curricula for the startups. (Offshore Engineer)
  2. The Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs will present "¡Americano! the Musical in the Park," in Sunset Park this Friday, June 10 at 3:30 p.m. (44th Street and 6th Avenue entrance). Don't miss this off-Broadway show that "tells the story of an undocumented student who became an activist." (Broadway World)
  3. The Department of Education is considering a $215 million budget cuts due to decreasing enrollment. NYC school principles and education advocates claim the cuts would "make it impossible for them to implement a newly-passed law to decrease class sizes." (New York Post)
  4. Are products not lasting as long as they used to? Consumer advocates say that the US is in a major "shrinkflation" cycle; manufacturers are shrinking product size or product quantity while charging the same or more. Consumers have to ask, "are manufacturers using supply constraints as a weapon to make more money?" (Patch)
  5. On Saturday, former Mayor Bill de Blasio played the washboard with a local band while attending his Park Slope neighborhood Block Party. It was a far cry from former President Bill Clinton playing the saxophone, but the congressional candidate described his day as "one of the very best days of each year." (Patch)

Are you a Sunset Park resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
