Here are the top stories in Sunset Park today:
- "Degentrify your coffee" is the mission statement from Hakim Sulaimani, owner of Yafa Café, a bustling coffee shop on a busy stretch of Fourth Avenue in Brooklyn's Sunset Park neighborhood. The soft-spoken 28 year old is determined to build a completely new coffee economy for Yemen, some 7,000 miles away. Each piece of décor, each cup of coffee poured, each item on the menu is an ode to Yemen. (Food & Wine)
- According to an announcement released yesterday from Community Board 10, filming for a television show, “Ramy Season 3” will take place on Wednesday and Thursday, March 2 and 3, around Sunset Park, within Community Board District 10. (Brooklyn Daily Eagle)
- FDNY firefighters battled a fire in East New York in the early hours of Monday morning. They responded to the call at 1569 East New York Ave., which housed Golden Deli and some apartments, at 2:32 a.m. The fire spread to the second and third floors of the building before it was brought under control at 3:41 a.m. (AMNY)
- A group of Brooklyn politicians led by Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Council Member Lincoln Restler are telling would-be developers to apply for a special permit to nix the city’s mandatory parking requirement in order to win approval from the elected officials. “Developers need our consent and approval, and we are telling them, plainly, that they have to file for a special permit to end parking requirements,” said Restler, who represents the transit-rich areas of Downtown and North Brooklyn. “The future of our city depends on it.” (Streetsblog New York)
